DRAX HALL, St Ann – Garvey Maceo are a point away from a place in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after winning their second straight game in the quarter-finals yesterday by beating Marcus Garvey Technical 3-1 in a Group Two game at Drax Hall.

Garvey Maceo jumped to the top of the Group with six points after Manchester High rebound from Saturday’s defeat to beat Spalding High, 4-1, at Kirkvine and joined the latter on three points.

The Jeffrey Hewitt-coached Garvey Maceo did not leave the venue unscathed, however, as one of their players was injured when a stone was thrown through the window of the bus, hitting him on the head.

Meanwhile, Group One was thrown wide open after leaders St James and Glenmuir played out a 0-0 draw at Jarrett Pak, and St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) hammered Frome Technical, 6-0, at Frome.

St James and Glenmuir still lead the group with four points, just one ahead of STETHS, with one game to go on Saturday.

At Drax Hall, Kenroy Thomas improved his leading tally to seven goals in leading Garvey Maceo to victory.

Mikhail Howell with his fourth goal and Derron McLeod with his first were also on the scoresheet, while Garfield Stewart scored for Marcus Garvey.

After being beaten in Saturday’s opening quarter-final round, Manchester handed Spalding their biggest defeat in the at last six seasons.

Jason Johnson came out of his goal-scoring slump with a hat-trick, while Orlando Platt got the other goal.

And reserve goalkeeper Pete-ray Lewis saved at least two goals in an outstanding second-half performance at Jarrett Park to keep Glenmuir in the race.

Coming in for the suspended Andre Blake, Lewis thwarted St James, who dominated the second half after giving up most of the possession to Glenmuir in the first half.

Lewis got to a high ball in the 64th minute as St James striker Allan Ottey hesitated just inside the penalty box and 10 minutes later, he knocked down a free kick from Ricardo Morris, then blocked a savage close-range drive from Roshane Reid, who came in from the left side.

Lewis pulled off another brilliant save in the 77th, pushing a shot from a rebound over the bar for a corner.

Ottey should have won the game for St James in the 89th, but his free header from the right side ended up in the side netting.

Glenmuir’s best chance in the first period fell to Ricardo Webb, but his free kick from some 35 yards was parried by Everette Nunes in the St James goal.

At Frome, STETHS hauled themselves back into the semi-final frame after their convincing whipping of Frome.

Deshorn Brown led the way with a hat-trick; Denmark Gillings and Alex Graham got one goal each, while the first goal came from a Frome defender.
