J’can-born Malcolm leads England to CLOBI Cup

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jamaica-born pacer Devon Malcolm snared three wickets and Graeme Hick lashed an unbeaten half-century for England to whip South Africa by eight wickets in the first ever CLOBI Cup International Masters Twenty20 cricket final on Saturday night.

The English veterans picked up the US$50,000 first prize after posting 160 for two off 19 overs in reply to South Africa’s 156 for five off 20 overs in the championship decider for masters over 35 years old at Kensington Oval.

Man of the Match Malcolm, now 46 years-old, recorded magnificent figures of three for 17 off his four overs to choke the South African batting.

Captain Dale Benkenstein hit 52 off 40 balls — smashing two sixes and two fours — to lead the South Africans after they were sent to bat.

All-rounder Lance Klusener also scored heavily for the Africans, stroking 43 off 33 balls with three sixes and one four.

Off-spinner John Emburey picked up two for 33.

The in-form Hick then belted 67 not out — his third half-century in the series — to steer England to victory.

Hick, who had also recorded unbeaten half-centuries against West Indies and Sri Lanka, faced just 46 balls for his 67, thumping three sixes and three fours.

He was not dismissed in the tournament and picked up the Man of the series award.

Hick linked up with Mark Ramprakash in a match-winning 116-run third-wicket stand.

Ramprakash scored 51 not out from 47 deliveries, with two fours and one six.

South Africa and England had won two matches each to get into the final, while Sri Lanka and West Indies were eliminated with 1-2 records.
