Nelson lands three-timer at Caymanas
PANAMANIAN jockey Dick Cardenas had stellar performances aboard The Principal and Prince of Peace to win the two trophies at stake on the 11-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
However, it was jockey Dane Nelson who took riding honours by booting home three winners.
Well backed at odds of 7-2, The Principal burst from the pack inside the final 100 metres to win the $650,000 Impulse Energy Drink Cup principal feature by 1 1/4.
Trained by Patrick Lynch, The Principal was held up in mid pack as the pacy That’s My Market, Bunker Dust, Rymat, Ariana and Minerva dictated the early fractions.
However, after turning for home, her in-form rider began to urge her forward and after catching the leaders flat-footed and hit the front entering the final 50 metres to run 1,200 metres in 1:15.1 to register her third win for the season in the field of 13 for Restricted Allowance 111 native-bred four-year-olds and upward (NW3 O/T).
After going about his business, it was left to Ariana, the mount of Carlton Malcolm and neglected in the betting at odds of 12-1, to follow The Principal back to the line.
Lil’ Tiger, another 12-1 betting option and ridden by Doushane Gordon, finished third, with Minerva — who brought them into the straight — fading against the rails as the pace quickened and closed the frame under Brian Harding as a 5-1 chance.
Owned by Clinton Rhoden, The Principal, a chestnut filly by Spacelink out of The Teacher (The Peacemaker), was bred at Orange Valley Estates Ltd.
It was her fourth win from 16 career starts and she earned $354,900 as the winner’s share for earnings of $1,219,900 lifetime.
Earlier, Prince of Peace held off a determined 4-5 favourite Forever Mine under Paul Francis to win the $786,000 Rajiv Maragh Trophy by a short head.
Going off as the 7-5 second favourite, Prince of Peace ran 1,100 metres in 1:06.4 for a hat-trick of wins in the six horse field for Open Allowance three-year-olds and upward.
Trained by Richard Azan for owners Elite Bloodstock, Prince of Peace was winning for the fourth time this season from 11 starts.
Medical Report, partnered by Andre Martin, who prompted the early pace, kept plugging away after the first two had gone about their business to finish in the money as a 7-1 bet with Working Image completing the frame partnered by Harding as a 2-1 bet.
