Cambridge finishes 10th at Bermuda Open
HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — Jamaican Delroy Cambridge claimed 10th place as US Senior Tour player Jerry Bruner edged Canadian Brennan Webb by one stroke to win the storm-hit Bermuda Open at Port Royal.
The 60-year-old Cambridge, a regular competitor on the island, was never able to get in a telling blow following an opening round of six-over-par 77, but picked up a cheque for $750 after closing on a 23-over-par total of 307.
The players had to complete 36 holes on Sunday after gales forced organisers to cancel Saturday’s round.
First and second round leader Bruner, 63, and Webb began the last round level but the veteran American claimed the $20,000 first prize following a titanic final-day struggle by sinking a two-foot putt at the final hole after his opponent missed from similar distance for a costly bogey.
Bruner, appearing in the tournament for the first time, completed the tournament on level-par 284, with Webb one-over on 285, three shots clear of American Chris Parra.
“It was a very long day but in the end everything worked out okay,” said Bruner.
“I just didn’t get the putts to go in when I needed to,” said Webb, who earned $10,000.
Defending champion Brian McCann of Canada was fourth on 294.
Twenty-seven-year-old American Perry Swenson, an LPGA Futures Tour professional, made history by becoming the first woman to play in the Open but she struggled in the tough conditions, carding a four-round total of 339.
The tournament was open to women for the first time.
