Womanbition celebrates International Women’s Day
THE third staging of Womanbition — the all-female showcase highlighting the artistic, creative and professional abilities of women — will be hosted at the Red Bones Blues Café in Kingston tomorrow in celebration of International Women’s Day.
For the past two years, Denise “Isis” Miller, Emprezz Mullings, Keteis Brissett, Nadia Stanley and Nelly Stharre have joined forces in hosting this event.
This year’s commemoration will posthumously honour Sajoya Alcott, the poet, lawyer, broadcaster and female activist who passed away in December last year. In 2010, the showcase featured Etana, Tanya Stephens, Jessica Yap and Alaine among many other females.
This year, the line-up includes the likes of Queen Ifrica, Cherry Natural and Nadine Sutherland being backed by an all-female band. The female energies will be unearthed at Womanbition again this year, with female police, security, hosts and disc jockeys. All proceeds go to Womanbitions’ charities, Mary’s Child — a home for teenage mothers and the UNIA nursing programme.
In addition, the Womanbition team has embarked on self- esteem sessions aimed at motivating and mentoring young girls in homes such as Mary’s Child. This year, the programme will further reach out to other young ladies in other homes and places of safety across Jamaica.
