A voice across borders: DJ Roy’s service earns national award

FOR more than three decades, Roy A Walters has used music to shorten the distance between Jamaica and its people overseas. Better known as DJ Roy, the veteran broadcaster and sound system personality has spent much of his career behind a microphone in New York speaking to a Caribbean audience for whom radio provides more than entertainment.

On October 19 that long-standing service will be recognised when DJ Roy receives Jamaica’s Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service during the annual National Heroes’ Day celebrations. Having collected numerous awards, citations and proclamations throughout his career, DJ Roy is no stranger to recognition for his contribution to radio broadcasting in the Diaspora and philanthropy. Still, he said being honoured by his homeland carries a significance of its own.

“To now be officially recognised and honoured by the Government of Jamaica is incredibly humbling. I am truly grateful,” he said.

The award marks an important moment in a career built around promoting Jamaican music, championing emerging artistes and ensuring the country’s culture remains visible beyond its shores.

Born in London and raised in Jamaica, DJ Roy eventually found his place within New York’s vibrant Caribbean entertainment community. His journey into broadcasting began at Medgar Evers College Radio on 97.5 FM, where he initially voiced commercials for local businesses.

Those early recordings opened the door to something greater. His personality and ease behind the microphone eventually earned him his own programme, setting in motion a broadcasting career that would span more than 30 years. Since then, DJ Roy has worked across several platforms, including
The Caribbean Blend, The VP Records Showcase on 105.9 FM, WLIB 1190 AM, Sirius Satellite Radio, and WSBU 98.5 FM in Atlanta. His work has also reached audiences through the FUBU and iHeartRadio platform. As a senior broadcaster he has helped introduce new music, interviewed some of the region’s most recognisable personalities, and maintained a space in which Caribbean stories can be heard.

“There is something very special about being recognised for doing what you genuinely love — promoting Jamaica, championing reggae music, and celebrating our culture,” DJ Roy said. “Through the highs and the lows I have remained a full-time cheerleader for Jamaica and our music, always doing my part to keep our culture visible and respected.”

But long before his name became as well known with Caribbean radio, DJ Roy was also helping to carry Jamaican music through sound system culture. As a co-founding member of the award-winning Road International sound system he helped bring that distinctly Jamaican experience to audiences throughout the Diaspora. Road International later became the first sound system and DJ outfit to secure a major endorsement from telecommunications company Digicel, signalling the expanding commercial influence of sound system culture.

His work, however, has not been confined to parties, studios, or entertainment stages. Over the years, DJ Roy has used his platform and influence to assist with fund-raising efforts for educational institutions across Jamaica. Schools that have benefited from those initiatives include Edwin Allen High, Calabar High, Excelsior High, Ardenne High, St Elizabeth Technical High, Vere Technical High, Dinthill Technical High, Kingston College, as well as Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College.

“I am proud of the work I have been able to do beyond music, including raising funds and supporting Jamaica, our schools and alumni associations,” he said, outlining that each recognition for the work he has done has held a special place in his heart.

“To have my journey acknowledged by my country is an honour I will never take for granted,” he said.

For Jamaicans living abroad, broadcasters such as DJ Roy often become cultural anchors. They introduce audiences to new artistes, preserve memories through familiar songs, and create a space in which the Diaspora can remain connected to the island. On National Heroes’ Day DJ Roy will step from behind the microphone and into the spotlight. The honour will recognise not simply the longevity of his career, but the purpose that has sustained it — service to the music, the culture, the community, and the country he has represented across borders.
