KINGSTON, Jamaica – Police officers assigned to the Narcotics Division say they are continuing their clamp down on activity in the guns-for-drugs trade across the island, with the latest seizure of more than 1,000 pounds of ganja in the last 24 hours.

The police say the drugs were seized in separate incidents.

The first incident was at the Norman Manley International Airport on Monday about 11:45 am when canine dogs alerted lawmen to several cartons. Subsequently, approximately 50 cartons, bearing the label of a processed food company and believed to be destined for St Maarten, were searched.

Five hundred and fifty-eight pounds of ganja with an estimated street value of J$3 million was seized. However, no one was arrested in connection with this find.

In the second incident on Tuesday, about 4:30 am, a man was arrested following a police vehicular check point along the New Green main road in Manchester, which resulted in the seizure of 330 pounds of ganja.

Reports are that the lawmen intercepted a Honda motorcar and the vehicle was searched. During the search the drug was found and the driver arrested; his identity is however being withheld.

The Narcotics Division said it also carried out an eradication exercise in Ashton district, Westmoreland between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm resulting in 300 pounds of cured ganja and 12 hectares that were under cultivation being destroyed. Both have an estimated street value of approximately over J $30 million with no arrest being made.
