Ginger treated with harmful chemicals stolen from agriculture ministry

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries is warning the public to be “extra careful” when purchasing green ginger.

According to the ministry, ginger treated with the chemical Topsin was stolen from the research station at Orange River in St Mary between Friday, April 14 and Sunday, April, 16.

A report from the research station indicates that approximately 450 pounds of ginger that was treated on Thursday, April 13 have been stolen.

If this ginger is consumed within seven days of treatment it can lead to severe vomiting, diarrohea and headaches, the ministry is cautioning.
