Miami, United States (AFP) – Hurricane Danny strengthened into a category 2 storm Friday as it churned in the central Atlantic but was expected to weaken over the coming days, forecasters said.

Danny, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, was located about 930 miles (1495 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, moving west-northwest at a pace of 10 miles per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

“There are no coastal warnings or watches in effect,” it said in its advisory, though it cautioned that “interests in the Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Danny.”

Maximum sustained winds have reached 105 miles per hour, but forecasters expect Danny to enter a “less conducive environment” as it turns west on Saturday and to then weaken over the next 48 hours.

“Danny remains a tiny hurricane,” the center said.

Earlier this month, experts said there was a 90 percent chance the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season would be less active than usual, due in part to the dampening effects of a strong El Nino weather pattern.
