SAFETY TIPS
AS motor vehicle accidents continue to increase, the police are asking members of the public to:
1. Slow down!
Most motor vehicle accidents are as a direct result of speeding.
2. Buckle up!
It has been proven that wearing a seat belt reduces the rate of serious injuries and deaths in car crashes by 50 per cent. One of the main reasons seat belts are so helpful is that they prevent people from being ejected from the car during a crash.
3. Do not drink and drive.
Any alcohol, even a small amount, can impair your driving so be a safe driver, don’t drink and drive.
4. Anticipate.
Observe and anticipate other road users and use your mirrors regularly.
5. Keep your distance.
You should have at least one car length of space between your car and the car in front of you.
6. Use car seats
All small children should be secured into a car seat before driving in a vehicle.
7. Walk on the sidewalk
Walk on the sidewalk facing the oncoming traffic. If there is no sidewalk and you should walk on the right side of the road.
8. Don’t text while driving.
Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it incorporates all types of driving distractions:
• Visual: Takes your eyes off the road.
• Manual: Takes your hands off the steering wheel.
• Cognitive: Takes your focus away from safe driving.
9. Take a break if you are tired.
If you are tired pull off the road into a safe, well-lit area and rest.
