Transport Authority warns PPV operators against raising fares
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Transport Authority is warning public passenger vehicle operators to desist from charging increased fares as the act is illegal.
The Transport Authority in a statement today said that it has received reports that some operators have raised their fares in response to Government’s $7.00 per litre increase in the special consumption tax (SCT) on gasoline.
The Authority said it is reminding public transportation operators that any increase in the fares for public passenger vehicles, must first be reviewed by the Minister of Transport & Mining. The charging of unapproved fares is therefore a breach of the Transport Authority Regulations.
The Authority is also warning operators, that those found to be in breach of the law, may face prosecution.
In the meantime, the Authority says commuters of public passenger vehicles who have been affected by the increased fares are invited to call the complaints line at 1-888-991-56871-888-991-5687 FREE and report the registration numbers of the vehicles, as well as the date and time they were overcharged.
