WESTERN BUREAU — Montego Bay teen Devron Stainrod, who is charged with the February 15 murder of his friend, had his sentencing on an assault charge delayed Thursday, pending a psychiatric evaluation.

He is to reappear before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court next Monday, when he is to be sentenced.

Stainrod was slapped with the assault charge after he attacked a fellow prisoner in a courthouse lock-up on February 24, shortly after he was remanded in custody on the murder charge.

Apparently smarting from having been remanded when his poor attitude left RM Paulette Williams reluctant to offer him bail, Stainrod returned to the cells where he smashed Richard Myrie’s head against the cell bars.

Myrie was left bruised and swollen.

When the assault case was brought before the court on February 26, the RM ordered a social inquiry report that has since been completed. But when the case was again brought before the court Thursday a psychiatric evaluation was ordered for the youth.

He is to return to court next Monday when the evaluation should have been completed and the murder case is also to be mentioned at that time.

On February 15, Stainrod reportedly got into a dispute with his friend, Omar Williams, 23, over a newspaper he should have delivered. During the dispute that took place in downtown Montego Bay, Williams reportedly used a stone to hit Stainrod on the left shoulder. Reports are that the 17-year-old then used a knife to stab Williams in the chest.

Williams died and Stainrod fled the scene.

His mother later took him to the police station, where he was placed in custody and then charged for murder.
