Student teacher and author cops church scholarship
Lilly Samuels (left), widow of the late Douglas Samuels, presents the Inaugural Mona Baptist Church Douglas Samuels Memorial Scholarship to Simone Whyte, final year student at Shortwood Teachers College.
The scholarship is valued at $100,000. Whyte, the author of a fictional book for seventh graders, which she hopes to get published soon, is pursuing a diploma in literature and linguistics.
Douglas Samuels was a deacon of Mona Baptist Church and senior lecturer in Art Education at St Joseph’s Teachers College. Mona Baptist also awarded a bursary of $50,000 to Allecia Francis, a student at the University of Technology in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies.
