Provide the proof, Campbell tells Shaw
FORMER Cabinet minister Colin Campbell has challenged Opposition MP Audley Shaw to provide proof amid his allegation that the former government minister was still in the employ of government. Senator Campbell last month resigned from the Cabinet as minister of information and development, as well as general secretary of the ruling People’s National Party, following the Trafigura scandal, in which the PNP was accused of accepting $31 million from the Dutch oil trader to help in its campaign financing.
Shaw, the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) spokesman on finance, alleged at Sunday’s public session of his party’s annual conference at the National Arena in Kingston that the former minister was still receiving government benefits, including a motor car, and maintaining an office at Jamaica House.
But, Campbell, now an organiser for the ruling party, denied the allegations and dismissed Shaw’s charges as baseless.
“Everybody knows that I resigned from government on October 8. I am not being paid by the government, and I do not have any office at Jamaica House,” Campbell told the Observer.
Meanwhile, Campbell said the motor vehicle that he drives belongs to him.
“I had sought and received permission to buy the vehicle that was assigned to me. It took some time for the price to be finalised, but they have and the vehicle is mine,” he said.
“Maybe Mr Shaw can tell me when and where I have been collecting money,” Campbell quipped.
