Dean leaves over 100 homeless in Portland
Port Antonio, Portland – Flood waters from Hurricane Dean left more than 100 people homeless in Portland after their homes were washed away during the powerful storm’s rampage Sunday night.
According to Richard Darby, manager of the shelter cited at Manchioneal All-Age School, 14 homes were washed away from the Sand Shore housing scheme. Other houses in the scheme were either damaged or flooded.
It was difficult yesterday to determine the full extent of the damage done in this parish as phone service and roads to some areas were cut off.
However, storm surges resulted in damage to roads in Long Bay, Manchioneal and Buff Bay, while portions of the Bryan’s Bay main road in Port Antonio were covered by sand. The College of Agriculture, Science and Education reported damage to a section of the male dormitory, the roof of the music room, and some of the walkways on the East Campus.
The road to Shotover and Stony Hill was yesterday blocked by fallen trees.
A National Works Agency team was seen on the road clearing trees and debris while officials from other government agencies were out assessing damage in order to report to a meeting later yesterday afternoon.
More than 1,200 persons were reported to be in 37 shelters in the parish.
