‘We are going to block it again’
RESIDENTS of Grange Lane in Portmore, St Catherine took to the streets again yesterday in protest over the absence of piped water in the community, this time hitting out at their political representatives.
The residents, who used tree trunks, old appliances and other items to block sections of the much traversed Grange Lane main road, said they were deceived by their political representatives.
“Close to the election (September 2007). they said we were going to get water; they even sent in some pipes and the pipe them run, but all now we cannot see any water,” said a frustrated male resident, who said he has been living in the community for more than 10 years.
He alleged that Fitz Jackson, the member of parliament for South St Catherine, promised that Grange Lane would get piped water before the elections, but that it never became a reality.
“But we are going to block it again, and this time it is going to be rough ’cause we are going to chop down the trees them go straight out and show them that we serious.
“You cannot have water in every community surrounding us and we in the middle and cannot get any water; that is just not fair, nothing cannot go like that,” said the man.
Jackson was said to be off the island and could not be reached on his mobile phone yesterday.
The residents said that in recent years they were able to get water from pipes in the nearby Morris Meadows community. However, he said the privilege has since been cut off because of the growth of that community.
Residents said Keith Hinds, the mayor of Portmore, promised to address the water problems in Grange Lane.
The Observer tried unsuccessfully to get a comment from Hinds on the matter yesterday.
