Civil unrest will have disastrous effects, PSOJ warns
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) last night warned against civil unrest rumoured to be linked to impending new tax measures, saying it would have disastrous effects on all Jamaicans.
Contacted for comment after last night’s national broadcast by the prime minister, PSOJ president, Chris Zacca, said the members, along with all Jamaicans, were anxiously awaiting the presentation of the 2009/2010 budget today by the finance minister.
“We have listened keenly to the prime minister’s address to the nation tonight and are extremely concerned that the Government is concerned that misguided elements may be planning unlawful disruptions in the near future.
“It is clear to us that the nation is faced with a serious crisis in its economy and budget, which has been mainly caused by the unprecedented global economic crisis. It is also clear that the Government has very few options in financing the new budget that would allow the country to maintain stability in these very difficult times,” Zacca said.
“Jamaica is sitting on the edge of a precipice and we are calling on all well-thinking Jamaicans to remain calm and to act in the interest of our nation at this time. Jamaica’s economy cannot afford any disruption in its current weak state, and civil unrest will have disastrous effects on all of us.
“We urge all Jamaicans to choose the path of responsible dialogue and debate. Let us utilise the social partnership – the Government, the Opposition, the unions, the private sector, and civil society to find the best way out of this difficult position that we all find ourselves in.
“The private sector stands willing to do what it takes to ensure that our nation can emerge from this crisis, ready and able to grow and prosper once the world returns to normal, to the benefit of all Jamaicans.”
