‘Popularity must never reign over morality’
A senior psychologist has weighed in on the raging Gully Gaza debate, chastising some parents whom she said are allowing ‘loose lyrics’ to grow their children instead of living up to their responsibilities.
“Many adults continue to fail in their responsibilities as parents,” senior psychologist Dr Valerie Freckleton told the Observer Wednesday.
She was speaking at the annual HEART Trust/NTA regional certification ceremony Wednesday at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston.
“Popularity must never reign over morality,” said Freckleton, lamenting that the morals in the society were fast declining.
The psychologist said: “We are living in a society where people are becoming too materialistic and its full time we look to take back Jamaica.”
Freckleton said that taking back the society would also require some divine intervention.
“We have reached a stage where metal detectors have replaced prayer in our schools,” said Freckleton, arguing that it was time to change.
Police last week began a crackdown on vendors who have been selling badges depicting violence with images of Vybz Kartel and Mavado, the two entertainers involved in the so-called Gully/Gaza rivalry, at school gates.
Last week Clarendon police said they seized over 3,000 items and other paraphernalia with violent lyrics and images that were being sold by vendors at various schools in the parish.
