Jurors in alleged bribery scam again remanded
THE two jurors accused of soliciting a bribe from the mother of a murder accused in exchange for a not guilty verdict will know on Thursday whether they will be granted bail.
Attorney-at-law Hopeton Clarke yesterday made bail applications on behalf of the accused, Verona Samuels, 23, and Natalie Sill, 44, in the Clarendon Resident Magistrate’s Court but a decision was stayed until Thursday, pending the verification of Sill’s home address.
The court was told that there were currently two addresses – Denbigh and May Pen, Clarendon – on record for Sill, a domestic helper.
In making the application, Clarke said Sill and Samuels, who are mothers to four and three children respectively, were sorry for what is being alleged against them.
Clarke indicated also that the accused women, who are charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, may “take a certain course” – indicating that they may plead guilty to the charge.
Both cried openly in court yesterday. The crying eventually subsided but Samuels, a model, was brought to further tears after being ordered remanded.
In opposing bail, the crown said that the allegations against the women were serious and has “shaken the judicial system”.
The two were held in the bathroom of an eatery in May Pen on November 16, moments after allegedly collecting $60,000 from the mother of Rohan Johnson to influence fellow jurors to render a favourable verdict in Johnson’s murder trial before Justice Bryan Sykes in the Clarendon Circuit Court.
