Ja’s Walters returns to ring Dec 18
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CMC) — Undefeated Jamaican featherweight boxer Nicholas Walters returns from a four-month injury lay-off to face the Dominican Republic’s Carlos Manuel Reyes for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) FedeLatin crown in Haiti later this month.
Panama-based Walters has not boxed since suffering a fractured hand in August and his clash with Reyes for the 126-pound regional title is set for December 18.
The bout was announced Tuesday during a press conference at the luxurious Karibe Convention Centre, which will also stage the card.
Haitian Jacques Deschamps, who manages Walters, is promoting the event in partnership with Premium Boxing Promotions, of Panama.
The Walters-Reyes showdown will be one of two title fights on the card, as former European Union champion, French-Haitian boxer Jimmy Colas, will tackle Colombian champion Jhon Berrio for the interim World Boxing Council (WBC) Latino light middleweight title.
Walters suffered a fractured hand — and needed surgery — after recording his last victory in early August in Panama City against Colombian Ernesto Vasquez.
In spite of the pain in his hand, Walters floored Vasquez twice in the sixth and final round and referee Julio Alvarado stopped the contest at two minutes, 23 seconds of the round.
The victory improved the former Caribbean amateur champion’s record to 12-0 with 10 knockouts.
Reyes has a record of 13-0 with seven knockouts.
The bout will be the first for Walters outside of Panama and the first for Reyes away from his native Dominican Republic.
