No goals on Lamey’s special day
WATERHOUSE on Sunday played to the largest crowd against St Georgers SC of Portland in a Digicel Premier League encounter at their Drewsland home in a long time, but their were no goals to celebrate.
And not even the man in whose honour the game was held could find the target, a task that he has carried out on numerous occasions and in style.
The game was disappointing because Waterhouse failed to carry on with a win from where they left off against Harbour View a week ago, and failing to do so disappointed spectators said to number some 6,000. They came out for good football, and of course, a favourable result. But they got neither.
So the occasion for Lamey’s testimonial game was a disappointment of sorts, as the crowd begged for goals. And not even the deadly Lamey, who has scored 150 goals since joining Waterhouse in 1995/96 season, could not find one.
Aiming to take full points from St Georges after their fine performance against Harbour View on their last outing, and failing to do so, has left coach Geoffrey Maxwell very disappointed. He attacked the individualism which he claimed interfered with team momentum
“We played poorly quite frankly. There was too much individualism among players on the field. This I thought palpably interrupted team planning and play pattern. This is a game that we threw away. I thought that we should have won by at the very least two goals,” rued Maxwell.
But St Georges’s Braxton Hyre had his own ideas of the game: “I thought both teams played well. They created few opportunities and I think the 0-0 draw is a fair result. (I think) earning a point on the road against Waterhouse is good for us.”
The Geoffrey Maxwellcoached team created five chances to one for St Georges, but that was as far as either team went in a game that was evenly contested in other departments.
However, man of the moment Lamey should have given Waterhouse the lead six minutes into the second half, but after receiving a telling pass from Roberto Fletcher on the right, he struck his shot against the crossbar.
