Indiscipline hurting August Town, says new coach Young
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Newly appointed coach of August Town FC, Paul Young, believes that the team has struggled to find form in this season’s Digicel Premier League because of indiscipline and lack of commitment, but has nonetheless vowed to do his best in helping them to stave off relegation.
Young, who took over from a frustrated Calvert Fitzgerald last week, also confessed that it will be a difficult job, but maintained that he is under no unnecessary pressure to perform.
“I came here when we were last and we are still in last, so there is no pressure”, Young said.
“We still have certain things (to iron out). The level of discipline and commitment needs to be improved, so that’s what I am working on currently. Definitely, that has played a role in what’s happening at the club”, added Young, who also had coaching stints with Portmore United and Waterhouse FC.
August Town, playing in the Premier League for the third time, have been having a torrid run and have languished in the relegation zone all season. From their 19 outings, they have won only three games, drawn six, while losing a record 10 times to be sitting on 15 points.
Additionally, they have the worst defensive record — conceding 31 goals, while scoring 16 times, which is bettered by all the other teams except Portmore United (10) and Village United (12).
Ironically, their best performance of the season thus far, was last week against Arnett Gardens when they were playing without a coach. They rallied from two goals down after 16 minutes to win the match 4-2.
However, playing away on Sunday against Sporting Central Academy, who are also hungry for points — August Town suffered a major setback — going down 0-2.
But, Young, a former national player, believes that the vision of staying alive is still intact and will be looking to strengthen his squad when the transfer window opens in just a few days.
“Not comfortable,” replied Young when asked if he is happy with the make-up of his current squad. “We have players who we can work with and we will try to improve them day by day. (But) we will be doing shopping in January,” he reassured.
