Lamey strikes down Portmore United
Kevin Lamey condemned Portmore United to their third consecutive defeat in the second round of the Digicel Premier League at Drewsland on Sunday when he scored the all-important goal in minute 36 to give 10-man Waterhouse a 1-0 win over the former champions.
Desmond Breakenridge was expelled for a second bookable offence in minute 88 and was only one of two players to be booked in the match. The other being Andre Darby of Portmore United.
The margin of victory does not reflect a true indication of the scoring chances that were available to either team. They were both profligate in front of goal. Waterhouse were the more wasteful, though, spurning no less than three other clear-cut opportunities, while Portmore United squandered two.
Searching for their first win in the round, Portmore United began positively and could have had the lead at the midway point of the game, but for a sensational reflex save by Richard McCallum from a well-directed shot on goal by Shauntel Mundle which kept the teams even until nine minutes to the half-time break.
Within the minute Waterhouse were presented an outstanding chance to take the lead, but Kenardo Forbes, the Waterhouse captain, with only goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr to beat, hammered the ball high over the cross bar from just inside the six-yard box.
Forbes made up for his colossal miss by setting up Lamey’s eventual winner, but the captain once again failed in minute 66 to increase the lead.
“This is a good result for us,” Waterhouse’s coach Geoffrey Maxwell admitted. He continued: “I thought we should have scored at least two goals. Credit must, however, go to Portmore as they played very well, but we dominated more in critical areas and came away with the win.”
Linval Dixon, his Portmore counterpart, saw the result as “disappointing”. “As you can see we played some good football, but just not putting away our chances. From what I saw we played well enough not to have left here without a point, but we are just not scoring the goals to complement how well we are playing. It is something that we have been working at and will continue to do so,” Dixon added.
