Lamey leads Waterhouse nearer end-of-round final
Waterhouse stormed back from a goal down to beat Sporting Central Academy 3-1 in the second round of the Digicel Premier League at Drewsland on Sunday and set themselves on the path for a place in the end-of-round final.
It was the fourth consecutive win and seventh overall with two drawn games for Waterhouse in the round with nine matches completed. Waterhouse lead the round with 23 points, six more than Boys’ Town and Harbour View, and with a much superior goal difference (+10 as against +4 and +3, respectively). Kevin Lamey, their leading goalscorer with 11 tallies so far this season, orchestrated the recovery to the delight of a near capacity crowd with goals in the 44th and 80th minutes, while second half substitute Jonathan Williams capped the effort with a goal in time added. Damarly Samuels scored Sporting Central Academy’s lone goal in minute 37.
Geoffrey Maxwell, the Waterhouse coach, said that he was happy with the three points, but was disappointed with the overall performance of the team as they “did not play well, but just good enough to secure three valuable points which could take us into the end-of-round final based on results from matches played elsewhere”.
“We lost but played well,” said Nigel Stewart, the Sporting Central Academy coach. “Somehow the score does not reflect how well we actually played. We had the game to win in the first few minutes of the second half, but Oneke Ford with only goalkeeper Richard McCallum to beat, failed to take advantage of the opportunity. Taking it would have extended our lead at the time and put pressure on Waterhouse to get back to us. We, however, continued to play well for the rest of the half, but the miss proved costly, as that was our best opportunity to force for a really exciting finish in a match which we lost with some honour,” Stewart added.
