WBA dishes out fines, suspensions to players
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Three players got off with fines and short suspensions after they faced the Disciplinary Committee of the Western Basketball Association (WBA) last Wednesday evening at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
The meeting was called to look into incidents that marred games late in the just-ended inaugural National Basketball League — West season.
Leroy Lawrence of Granville Jaguars and two players from Catherine Hall
All-stars, Goyan Malcolm and Dwain McIntosh faced the tribunal for their parts in the incidents.
Lawrence, who was ejected from the game after he struck Inner-city Avalanche’s Godfrey Rodriques in the face with an open palm despite being dragged away from the player more than once by teammates, was the heaviest hit.
He was fined $3,000 and suspended for three games, while the Catherine Hall players both received the minimum punishment of $2,000 and a one-game suspension after admitting their part in an altercation that caused Game Two of the final to end prematurely with less than a minute to go with their team trailing 60-67.
Both Malcolm and McIntosh had gotten disqualifying fouls before Malcolm approached the scoring table where he loudly vented his anger at what he thought was poor score-keeping which robbed his team of a chance to win.
The suspensions will not affect pre-season games but competitive games in the NBL-West season.
