Race on for Western Confed Super League final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The race for the mid-season final in the Captain’s Bakery Western Confederation Super League is down to three teams as former champions Granville United dropped out on Sunday after drawing with Mt Pelier at Jarrett Park.
Seba United, Reno FC and Frome FC all scored wins to stay in contention for the mid-season play-offs set for early February.
Seba United beat nine-man Violet Kickers 2-0 to stay in front on 26 points from 10 games, three more than Reno who blanked Bamboo 3-0, while Frome moved to 21 points after edging defending champions Wadadah, 2-1.
After being held 0-0 for about 60 minutes by a resilient Violet Kickers in the second game of a triple-header at Jarrett Park, Seba prevailed after Randy Roberts and goalkeeper Warren Barrett were both sent off by referee Horace Clarke in the 62nd minute.
Clarke first sent off Roberts after the Violet Kickers player brought down Seba’s Torrey Samuels in a clumsy tackle and Barrett who protested the decision followed soon after.
Up to the time of the incident, Barrett had shown tremendous form to deny Seba with a string of outstanding saves.
At Frome, goals from Linval Wilson in the 19th minute, Davion Thorpe in the 74th and Craig Foster in the 85th carried Reno to their seventh win of the season as Bamboo FC lost two games in a row after going their previous six games without a loss.
Frome, last season’s beaten finalists, kept their slim hopes alive by turning back 10-man Wadadah 2-1.
Wadadah lost Davian Williams in the 30th minute after referee Recardo Sailsman sent him off for foul and abusive language.
Neville Smith handed Frome the lead two minutes into the second half when he headed home from close range after a cross form the left beat the Wadadah custodian at his near right hand post.
Janique Thomas doubled the scores in the 78th minute when he sped past one defender and powered home from inside the 18-yard- box.
Wadadah pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when Curtis Palmer converted a penalty, but two minutes later missed a golden chance to level the scores when he nodded the ball powerfully into the ground inches from the line with the goalkeeper out of position, only to see the ball bounce high over the bar.
Granville gave up a last-minute equaliser to Mt Pelier in the third game at Jarrett Park to crash out of contention for a place in the mid-season final as all four goals came in the second half.
Odean Snow gave Granville the lead in the 47th minute, but Ledron Smith equalised in the 61st.
Dexter Smith restored Granville’s lead in the 79th, but Heron Street’s 90th-minute equaliser denied them full points.
Andre Barrett scored twice for Catherine Hall in the 67th and 90th minutes to give them a 2-1 win over Exidos at the UDC field.
The win carried Catherine Hall to 15 points as they vaulted Bamboo into fifth place, a point behind Granville.
Meanwhile last-placed Prosper and Petersfield shared eight goals in a 4-4 draw at the Rusea’s field in Lucea.
