Bonner drafted into CCC squad
FORMER West Indies Under-19 player Nkrumah Bonner has been drafted into the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CC) squad and could start in today’s fourth round regional four-day first-class game against Guyana.
Bonner, 21, replaces fellow Jamaican Simon Jackson, who returned home last Tuesday after a disappointing start to the four-day season campaign, scoring 79 runs from six innings.
Jackson’s replacement has been a prodigious talent at the youth level and formed part of the nucleus of that 2008 West Indies Under-19 World Cup team which includes Adrian Barath and Daren Bravo.
Bonner, who attends Mico Teacher’s College in Jamaica, is considered a fringe player in the Jamaican set-up as he is yet to gain any foothold in a competitive senior squad.
He, however, took his chances when he was called for the first time by the CCC team in their final trial match in Barbados.
The right-hand batsman was among three centurions in his first and only try-out with the college side, scoring a century (108) and taking 3-24.
Trinidadian Kjorn Ottley and Raymon Reifer of Barbados also scored centuries in that match.
Despite his efforts, Bonner and the other centurions were overlooked for the final 13-man team ahead of the tournament’s start.
A second chance seemingly has been granted and Bonner will join fellow countrymen Chadwick Walton, who is the wicketkeeper, and leg-spin bowler Gavin Wallace in the squad.
The Combined Campuses and Colleges are currently third in the seven-team standings on 12 points. The team won their opening game against Trinidad and Tobago, but has since suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of Barbados and the Windward Islands.
