UTech, UWI share honours in Intercol TT
In a clash of two former champions in a male Intercol Table Tennis match played Thursday, University of Technology (UTech) clipped hosts University of the West Indies (UWI) 3-2, in the Students’ Union Hall, as the League continued.
On the female side, UWI won by default, as the UTech team failed to show.
Despite the loss, the UWI men still lead the points standing and have completed their fixtures with 14 points. They are followed by UTech with 12 points, GC Foster College, 10 points; and Mico University College and Montego Bay Community College (MBCC) on seven points each.
The top four finishers will qualify for semi-finals, where the first-placed team will face the fourth-placed team; and second and third teams will oppose each other.
The UWI females extended their lead atop the standing with their win yesterday and are now on eight points, ahead of GC Foster on 3.5 points and UTech with 2.5 points. UWI have completed their fixtures — with a perfect win record, while UTech and GC Foster each have a match remaining against each other.
The top two finishers will contest the final.
UWI and UTech are coached by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Level II coaches Sandra Riettie and Colin McNeish, respectively, GC Foster is coached Richard Davidson, MBCC by Glendon Powell and Mico by player/coach Altamont Henry.
In individual results in the men’s matches, Carlington Facey crushed Saeed Thomas 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 (3-0) and national player Emani McPherson overpowered Joel Campbell 11-2, 11-7, 11-6 (3-0) in singles match victories for UTech. McPherson and Facey edged Robert Gabay and Chevarlo Foster 11-2, 11-13, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7 (3-2) in doubles, for UTech’s third win, as Foster trounced Damion Scott 11-5, 11-4, 11-7 (3-0) and Gabay eased past Antonio Phillips 11-4, 11-4, 11-6 (3-0), for UWI’s two consolation triumphs.
Team semi-finals and finals will be played at UTech next Saturday. On this date, individual events — men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, will also be contested. Reserve players for all teams and players from institutions who are not taking part in the team competition, are invited to participate in the individual events.
