W’House get win at last in DPL
THIRTY minutes of positive and energetic football from Andre Clennon combined with a fine finish from Jonathon Williams in the 67th minute fashioned the first win for Waterhouse in the third round of the Digicel Premier League against August Town at Drewsland on Wednesday.
After his tried and tested striker Kevin Lamey failed to sparkle and in the process missed an open goal in the 24th minute, coach Geoffrey Maxwell called upon his Under-21 marauder Clennon in the 59th minute to replace Lamey and after eight minutes in the game, his pace and speed on either side of the pitch helped to prise open a well-organised August Town defence to create the only goal of the match.
It was a victory which Maxwell heartily welcomed. “This should be good for team morale. But like everything else nothing lasts forever and I knew it had to stop at some time. The important thing though is that we got the win and possibly this is what we need to give us a kick start because we are having a very miserable third round.”
Waterhouse looked flat before the goal was scored but after the introduction of Clennon this added a juicy tactical element to the Waterhouse forward line, as he created all sorts of problems to the August Town defence. With his strong running and bustling play he was mainly responsible for the goal being scored.
“Yes, Clennon came on with instructions to go at the back line of August Town as they were playing with a flat four formation. He is a good young player, who needs polishing, but his none stop industry created the chance for our first win in this round and from here on we can only go from strength to strength,” Maxwell said.
August Town’s assistant coach Dwight Morgan thought “it was an injudicious play on the part of our defence which caused the goal and cancelled out our first-half effort where we contained Waterhouse and ruined plans to use our experienced players in the second half to win the game”.
