Rock The Cloth… For $1,000 or less!
We continue to feature pieces that can be made with fabrics in particular price ranges. This week, fabric costs less than $1,000 and some just a little over $500, so each look is very affordable.
While we are saving by making our own garment and saving on fabric, the garment and overall look don’t have to say “budget” or “cheap”. You can pair a home-made garment with a ready-to-wear and even an investment piece, but the best way to look expensive and chic is with careful construction. I’ve used two patterns for the designs featured, and by paying attention to detail, it doesn’t have to look home-made. Here are some tips:
1. If using stripes, match lines along the seams. Notice that this is achieved not only at the side seams, but also at the sleeves.
2. Symmetrical or balanced prints:
a. Align prints at the seams, so that focus patterns occur at the same eye level at the front and back. Notice that the hem ends at the same place on the pattern at the front and back.
b. Balance the focal area or symmetry. The centre line of the print is placed at the centre of the garment.
c. Match details with the print. For example, the sleeves incorporate a primary design element that is the same on both sleeves.
And with this careful attention to detail and a good eye for stylish fashion prints, you can make your own chic and beautiful pieces.
