Extortionists sentenced for shaking down landlord
Two men who were convicted late last month on extortion charges were sentenced when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Thirty-three year-old Eric Dennis and his co-accused, 48-year-old Hopeton Morgan — both of West Main Drive Kingston 20 — were both charged for obtaining money by menace and sentenced to 15 and three months respectively, following investigations by the Organised Crime Investigation Division.
Dennis and Morgan were taken into custody last year after extorting thousands of dollars from a landlord in the Kingston 20 area.
The duo made unreasonable demands on the landlord between October 2007 and October 2008 as soon as he collected rent from his tenants. It is also reported that the accused men have also beaten the landlord when extortion payments were late or not in the amounts demanded.
