The office of Prime Minister deserves respect
Dear Editor,
The news headline in the Sunday Observer of October 24, “Admiral Lewin slaps down PM Golding” may have added drama and drawn attention to the article, but in our opinion, it borders on being discourteous to the PM and the highest office in the land. Has credibility been so lost that civility and graciousness have gone out the Jamaica House door?
Another Sunday Observer headline ( October 3), fair and balanced, maybe, “It’s war! – Harold Brady files lawsuit” (PM holds to position in dispute with Brady) with “doctored” pictures of both men, Mr Brady and PM Golding, bare-chested, face to face, feigning a boxing encounter. We are speaking here of our prime minister – he leads the country and represents us abroad.
Whoever occupies Jamaica House, these are not the kind of unflattering headlines we want to see, and it is not in these undignified ways that we want to present the Prime Minister of Jamaica, warranted or not.
Yet, the article is bereft of the hard hit highlighted in the headline and contradicting statements in the wiretap issue that led ultimately to the West Kingston unrest earlier this year.
All told, there remains the most urgent need to negate any real or perceived credibility deficit within the highest office of the land and our media must help in the shoring up of the office, if not the man.
