JAMAICA has been introduced to new dancehall act, Royal, who has, working steadily to take it to the dancehall community.

Born Novar Excell, the young, talented and energetic entertainer grew up in East Kingston, in the Vineyard Town community and attended the Calabar High School.

This confident artiste says he always knew he was bound for stardom as he quips, “I always saw my mother as a queen and my father as king, therefore I was royalty from birth and it was only fitting that my name be Royal.”

Royal’s professional musical career started in 2008, and since then he has been busy understanding the entertainment industry and honing his craft as an artiste. Not one to be rushed, he always knew that he wanted to do music, even while he was pursuing other interests.

“Music chose me you know,” Royal said, “no matter what else I did, the music is my first and biggest passion that I can never let go.”

Royal enjoys listening to songs that can teach and inspire him as well as to challenge him to be better. As such, he prefers listening to artistes like Buju Banton, Rick Ross, Bob Marley, Shabba Ranks, Notorious BIG, Anthony B, Jimmy Cliff, Usher and Seal.

“These artistes are not only lyrically amazing, but they know how to captivate their audience,” the up-and-coming star commented, adding that he looks to them as he develops his own career.

Royal prides himself on his versatility, as this is what he says makes him different from many other entertainers and artistes in the industry. “My music is easy to relate to, but even so the flow and sound of the end-product might not be in the way you would expect or normally hear”

The 20-something year old is ready to kick-start promotion for his new singles, To The Top, Party and Swagga; and it is his philosophy that valuable lessons about life and its hardships ought to be taught to the younger generation, and believes too that giving up “is never an option”.
