Benbow, Diablo for North St Catherine KO final

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — Benbow and FC Diablo will contest the final of the LIME/North St Catherine Division Two Knockout competition following contrasting semi-final victories on Sunday at Whitehouse.

A brace from Cassique Vassell on either side of the break helped Benbow to a convincing 3-0 beating of Wakefield.

Vassell netted in the 27th and 58th minutes to put Benbow on the brink of qualification, which was secured by Norbert O’Meally 15 minutes from full-time.

Their opponent in Sunday’s final, Diablo, were less convincing in their semi-final match-up against Ewarton and needed a 16th-mnute penalty from Damion Coley to seal their berth.

Meanwhile, leaders Black Lion returned to winning ways in the LIME/St Catherine Major League by blanking last-placed Cumberland 3-0.

Portmore-based Cumberland actually did well to keep the scores level at the half, but could not withstand Black Lion’s second-half onslaught as they fell behind just five after the restart when Damarley Dawkin struck.

Jason Peart in the 60th and Terrance Thomas in the 90th then completed what amounted to a comfortable win for Black Lion, as they improved 33 points — nine clear of Rodwood, who edged Loyal Lakes with a 15th-minute goal from Andrea Austin.

In other games, midseason champions Portsmouth and McCook’s Pen also recorded identical 1-0 wins against Albion and Dunbeholden, respectively.

The win saw Portsmouth replacing Spanish Town Police (22) as the third-placed team on 23 points after the lawmen drew 0-0 with Wanderers.

Newcomers McCook’s Pen are now sixth on 18 points.
