IT was a day of record-equalling at Caymanas Park yesterday. Champion sprinter Saint Cecelia ran 1,000 metres in 56.2 to equal the stakes record held by Musical Maestro and won the $1,188,000 The Reggae Trophy Graded Stakes feature by 2 1/2 lengths.

Meanwhile, the effervescent 10-year-old grey gelding, Nasatol, outsped rivals in a $450,000 – $400,000 claiming event by a similar margin to chalk up his 34th win from 111 career starts at the venue to equal the record held by Master Blaster.

Champion jockey Omar Walker, who was aboard Nasatol, rode three winners on the 11-race card to knot up with leading jockey Shane Ellis on 45 wins at one stage after starting the day trailing by three. Ellis, who started the day on 44 wins, had earlier increased his tally to 45 before Walker drew level in the ninth race by booting home the 6-5 chance Private Card for trainer Vincent Edwards.

However, Ellis clawed his way back to the top by breaking the deadlock in the final event of the day aboard the Wayne Dacosta-trained It Is Written to lead by one.

Saint Cecelia, trained by Spencer Chung and ridden by 4-0kg claiming apprentice Osive Donegal, came down in class and proved too good for her rivals.

Installed the even money favourite in the six-horse field, Saint Celelia stalked the pace of Dance So Sweet, the 8-5 second choice, then took over after entering the final 150 metres and was never seriously threatened in the rush for the wire while notching her 2 1/4 length score.

Dance So Sweet, ridden by Ameth Robles, who ended up second, had another 1 1/2 to spare on Sir Von, who showed as a 2-1 choice ridden by Aaron Chatrie, with Brash & Sassy, ridden by Paul Francis, completing the frame at 6-1.

It was the first run over the distance for the five-year-old chestnut mare and trainer Chung was not surprised by her performance.

“I always wanted to go five straight with her knowing the speed that she has, but last year this time when this race was running, she was off and I put her on a rest, so I never got to put her over the distance but I always want to and she just proved my point.”

Owned by Stephen A & WP Valentine Chung, Saint Celelia is by Burning Marque out of She’s On Wheels (Bates Motel) and bred at Ham Stables Ltd.

She was winning her 10th race from 21 career starts. She earned $648,650 as the winner’s share for earnings of $9,983,300 lifetime.
