Vonessa’s Haircare

Under the Dryer

Our Under the Dryer team recently popped in for a look at the newly reopened Vonessa’s Salon & Day Spa, owned by cosmetologist Vonessa Smith. We watched as her clients received chic new hairstyles while enjoying refreshing Poinsettia and Kingston 8 cocktails provided by J Wray & Nephew. Here’s how to not only recreate their ‘dos, but also keep your hair healthy.

THE CLIENTS: Ashley Grant, Donna Davidson, Stephanie Taylor, Tiffane Lawla, Ashley-Rae Walsh, Melanie Henry, Sherene Todd, Terian Cunningham, Darion Walsh, Marcia Stalk and Joanna and Jessica Jones.

Sleek and Straight

Ashley Grant, student

For a busy student, a sleek and straight hairstyle is very easy to maintain. Ashley’s look was made more fun by adding clip-in hair extensions, which can be easily replaced with new colours if she desires during her next salon visit.

Get the look:

o Shampoo hair with AlfaParf Milano Di Bamboo moisturising shampoo and conditioner.

o Combine Alfaparf Midollo Di Bamboo recharging mask treatment and Schwarzkopf Smooth N Shine mousse and apply generously to hair before roller-setting it.

o Place client under the dryer.

o Brush hair and blow-dry the roots.

o Section hair and add black and burgundy clip-in hair extensions.

o Lightly mist hair with Alfaparf Illuminating Cristalli Liquidi to soften hair and give sheen.

o Straighten the hair using a ceramic flat iron.

o Finish with a light spritz of Proclaim olive spray-on glosser to enhance hair colour and prevent future frizzing of the hair.

Tips:

Maintaining that ‘fresh from the salon’ look in-between visits is a relatively simple process. It would be a good idea to invest in moisturising serums such as Alfaparf Illuminating Cristalli Liquidi or Farouk Chi Silk Infusion. This will ensure that when you wrap your hair every night or style it in the morning, it remains shiny and soft.

Old Hollywood Glamour

Donna Davidson – Novartis Pharmaceuticals

Donna recently bleached her hair, so, she popped in today to get her newly coloured hair restyled for a fresh look.

Get the look:

o Shampoo hair using Redken products.

o Deep-condition hair with Pure Shine Curls Lotion to give hair natural-looking, frizz-free curls.

o Finish with Proclaim Olive Spray-on Glosser for added shine.

Tips:

Bleaching your hair is a serious commitment, as your hair may become dull, dry and damaged. If you do not have the time to visit the salon regularly, bleaching or dyeing your hair may not be a good decision. However, it is not impossible to take care of your hair after it has been coloured. The first step is to invest in good hair products for colour-treated hair. Redken Color Extend line — inclusive of shampoos, conditioners and treatments — may be a good start. Also, minimise heat application as much as possible and visit your salon for treatment and upkeep every two weeks.

A chic ‘in-between’

Stephanie Taylor – Millard Development

Stephanie is growing out her cropped cut, so what does she do in the interim? “Look fabulous of course!” she shares with our team. Vonessa was sure to have a plan in place for the different shapes the hair will take as Stephanie grows out her hair. Today she styles her bob-length hair in loose, ‘rockstar-like’ curls, away from the face.

Get the look:

o Shampoo hair with Keracare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and Keracare Humecto Creme Conditioner, if you have dry or frizzy hair.

o Combine Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-in Treatment and Pure Shine Bouncy Shiny Curls mousse and apply generously to hair.

o Roller-set hair and sit under the dryer for approximately 45 minutes (time varies depending on the length).

o Gently brush and wrap hair.

o Lightly mist hair with Beyond the Zone Turn Up The Heat! Holding Spray to protect the hair from potential heat damage and keep curls in place.

o Use a ceramic flat iron to curl the hair, and lightly apply Farouk Chi Silk Infusion for sheen.

o Run comb gently through the curls and lightly mist with Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Cristalli Illuminating Finishing Liquidi to complete the look.

Tips:

Growing out a short haircut is problematic for many women. But it does not have to be an unpleasant experience. In fact, it is the perfect opportunity to have fun trying several new looks until you get to the desired length. Ensure that you visit your stylist regularly. He/she can create a more playful punk-rock look by styling hair away from the face. It is important to apply pomade regularly to keep hair looking sleek, shiny and healthy.

Rejuvenated Curls

Tiffane Lawla, student

To achieve Tiffane’s touchable loose curls, many things were taken into consideration. Thus, the products were specially used to treat her damaged, frizzy hair.

Get the look:

o Shampoo hair with Alfaparf Midollo Di Bamboo Restructuring Shampoo.

o Liberally apply a combination of Alfaparf Nutri-Seduction Wearable Treatment and Proclaim Foaming Wrap Lotion to hair.

o Roller-set hair and sit under the dryer.

o Use a ceramic flat iron to straighten the roots only.

o Place a few drops of Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Cristalli Liquidi in your palms and gently massage it into the hair.

o Tease and contour curls with the fingers.

o Finish the look with Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Cristalli Illuminating Finishing Liquidi.

Tips:

Routine treatments are a very important part of the haircare regime. Ensure that the products used are designed specifically for the condition of your hair. The products used in Tiffane’s hair are for strengthening, softening and smoothing the texture of the hair. Also, when trying to achieve this particular style, the ceramic flat iron is used on the roots only to maintain the curly effect created with the rollers.

Frizz Fix

Ashley-Rae Walsh, student

Ashley-Rae has naturally frizzy hair, which often takes a long time to tame. The team at Vonessa’s has formulated a routine which gives her a smooth and trendy finish.

Get the look:

o Lightly shampoo with Alfaparf Midollo Di Bamboo Reconstructing Shampoo.

o Towel-dry hair and apply products from the EasyStraight Straight Styling Solutions Long-Lasting Frizz Remover kit.

o Comb the EasyStraight products through the hair three times and cover with a plastic cap for 30 minutes.

o Re-shampoo with Alfaparf Midollo Di Bamboo Reconstructing Shampoo.

o Apply Alfaparf Midollo Di Bamboo Recharging Mask Treatment, then sit under the dryer for 20 minutes ahead of rinsing.

o Roller-set hair and sit under the dryer.

o Add blonde clip-in hair extensions to the front of the hair.

o Lightly mist hair with Beyond the Zone Turn Up The Heat! Holding Spray.

o Straighten with a ceramic flat iron and apply Farouk Chi Silk Infusion for sheen.

Tips:

It is hard to tame naturally frizzy hair, especially in this tropical climate. People with this kind of hair problem often try to ‘beat the frizz’ by applying only water to the hair. This can be problematic as only moisture-heavy products or mousse can help. For a more lasting solution to the problem, try EasyStraight Straight Styling Solutions Long-Lasting Frizz Remover, which is an effective treatment for frizz. It strengthens, straightens, moisturises and makes hair more manageable. The best news is it takes only 30 minutes to complete. It is important to note that this is not a permanent solution to frizzy hair texture as it lasts for up to 30 days.

The Elevated Bob

Melanie Henry, medical doctor

The bob is a timeless ‘do, but you can enhance the cut with a more trendy take on the style. In Melanie’s case, Vonessa opted for a more playful elevated cut with curls.

o Lather hair gently with Redken shampoo to cleanse, strengthen and add shine.

o Rinse and generously apply Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-in Conditioner and Proclaim Foaming Wrap Lotion to moisturise and repair damaged hair.

o Roller-set hair with large curlers and sit under the dryer.

o When hair is dry, use a blow dryer and round brush to straighten the roots.

o Mist hair with Beyond the Zone Turn Up The Heat! Holding Spray and style with a curling iron.

o Apply Farouk Chi Silk Infusion for sheen.

o Finish the look with Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Cristalli Illuminating Finishing Liquidi.

Tips:

Have your hair trimmed monthly to maintain the cut. A holding spray is important to keep the curls in place. Beyond the Zone Turn Up The Heat! Holding Spray is a good product to keep the bob in place.

A No-Hassle Do

Sherene Todd

o Shampoo and condition hair with Redken products.

o Apply Proclaim Foaming Wrap Lotion and sit under the dryer for 30 minutes.

o Moroccanoil oil treatment is lightly applied to the hair for sheen.

o Style hair with a curling iron.

o For a more polished look, apply Tigi Bed Head Cool Hair Stick to the back and sides to keep it in place.

o Lightly mist hair with Proclaim Spray-on Glosser.

Tips:

If you have decided to go with a really short haircut similar to Sherene’s, there is no need to panic about a maintenance regime. In fact, though it may seem drastic, it is ideal for the woman on the go. A pixie cut is very diverse in terms of styling — it can be worn with or without curls and still look chic. Ensure that you get your hair relaxed regularly. Also, when you are styling it on your own, apply Tigi Bed Head Cool Hair Stick to the back and sides to keep hair neat and glossy.

Short Pixie Cut

Terian Cunningham – proprietor, Gabriella’s Cosmetics & Gabriella’s Couture

o Relax hair with Affirm Moisture Plus Conditioning Relaxer with protecto for dry hair and sensitive scalp.

o Apply a combination of Proclaim Foaming Wrap Lotion, Mizani leave-in treatment, and Proclaim Glossing Polish.

o Wrap hair and sit under the dryer for 30 minutes.

o Lightly apply Design Essentials Silk Essentials hair oil and mist hair with Beyond the Zone Turn Up The Heat! Holding Spray.

o Use a curling iron to create the desired effect.

Tips:

This haircut may be challenging for some women to maintain. At this length, a trim is recommended every month. You will also need to know how to use a curling iron to get the salon-like effect. It is important to note that before you curl the hair, a heat protector needs to be applied. Beyond the Zone Turn Up The Heat! Holding Spray is an excellent product, as it not only protects the hair from heat damage, but also holds curls in place and provides sheen.

Braided Beauties

Joanna and Jessica Jones

These youngsters opted for styles that were durable and age appropriate. Joanna, 11, received a braided Mohawk, complete with colourful beads, while seven-year-old Jessica got flat twists. The warm climate was taken into consideration when product selection was done for the looks. The products selected will protect their hair from heat damage and provide sufficient moisture.

Tips:

Before blow-drying the hair in preparation for braiding, apply aloe vera and a heat protector. Maintain the look by applying Proclaim Glossing Polish daily.

Airbrushed Perfection

Marcia Stalk

Airbrushing overlaid acrylic tips is not only a fun way to get more creative nail art/designs, but also a more lasting nail finish. Nail technician Tameika Sang uses a top coat to ensure that the nails would not ever appear chipped. A filling of the acrylic overlay will be required in two to three weeks to keep the look fresh.

Tips:

If you like the look, but you are unsure about wearing tips, you can ask your nail technician to do a similar process on your natural nails.

Always Well-Groomed

Darion Walsh – Cosmo’s Car Rental exec

Darion visits Vonessa’s every so often for a manicure and pedicure, which he finds “very relaxing”. He interacts with a number of clients daily, so for him, it is imperative to maintain good grooming. Today he pops in for a routine mani-pedi from his nail technician Natalee Daley, and, of course, to check out the new spot.

Tips:

Keep your nails clean and low, and moisturise hands to maintain smooth skin; it is important to practise proper hygiene.

Vonessa’s Haircare Tips

o You must first consider the texture, length and condition of your hair before you attempt any of the featured looks.

o Seek professional consultation before you try a new hairstyle.

o Though you may see some similarities with the featured clientele, remember that everybody’s hair is different. Not all products work effectively in every hair texture. Head to your stylist to see what products will work best for your hair before you decide to use any of the products mentioned.

o Always moisturise your hair. Do not think that if your job does not require you to be in the sun all day that frequent application of a moisturiser is unnecessary. Our warm climate has potentially damaging effects and we should make it a priority to protect our hair from the heat.

o If you have a sensitive scalp, consult a dermatologist before using certain hair products.

o Do not shampoo your hair every day as it removes all the natural oils from the hair and scalp. Try combing through your hair with a conditioner instead. You may leave a little in and style as usual.
