Ex cop implicated in kidnapping remanded
ALPHEUS Wade, the former police officer implicated in the abduction of a businessman earlier this year, was yesterday remanded in custody after his trial on ganja and ammunition charges was postponed in the Corporate Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The 32-year-old Wade, a music consultant of Norbrook Drive, St Andrew, was arrested and charged in June after police raided his home as part of their probe into the kidnapping of the businessman on June 16.
One pound of ganja and two rounds of 9mm cartridges and a round of 5.6mm cartridges were allegedly found during the search.
Wade is facing trial on charges of possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, taking steps to export ganja, and possession of illegal ammunition.
Wade’s girlfriend, Rashida Gopie, who was at the home during the raid, was also charged.
When the two appeared for trial yesterday, Wade’s lawyer, Franklin Halliburton, asked for further trial date. The trial was rescheduled for October 25. Wade was remanded, while Gopie’s bail was extended by Magistrate Maxine Ellis.
Meantime, Wade, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the kidnapping of the businessman, is to face the Gun Court on a charge of abduction.
The businessman was reportedly abducted near his home on Norbrook Drive in St Andrew on June 16. He was reportedly taken to a house in Portmore where he was rescued by police.
Attorney Carolyn Chuck is representing Gopie.
