Ladylike upstages in 2-y-o feature
LADYLIKE, a 4-1 chance grey filly, upstaged her more fancied rivals to win the seventh running of the $2,95,000 Cash Pot “Only For Me” Trophy, Graded Stakes native-bred two-year-old feature sponsored by Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) at Caymanas Park yesterday.
It was the first leg of the lucrative SVL Two-Year-Old Triple Crown Series and Ladylike, owned by Hamark Farms, ran 1,200 metres in a time of 1:13.2 for victory by 1 1/4 lengths. Trained by Dwight Chen, Ladylike was winning for the second time from three starts.
Awesome Camille, the 9-5 second favourite, ridden by Omar Walker, was second. Exotic Gold showed under Ameth Robles as a 33-1 shot with morning-line 7-5 favourite El Patron, ridden by leading jockey Dick Cardenas, completing the frame in the nine-horse field.
Ladylike, ridden by Dane Nelson, came storming down the stretch after turning for home to nail Awesome Camille close home for victory after the longtime leader seemed to tire nearing the end of the race.
Stalking the leading group of Awesome Camille, Poochi Liu, ridden by Winston Griffiths, and Cantare, ridden by Shane Ellis, Ladylike looked threatening leaving the 800 pole and it was a little surprise when she made her move wide just before turning for home.
It was a victory anticipated by Nelson who said afterwards, “She is no big sprinter but her times in the mornings showed that she had a much better than even chance of winning coming into the race than her rivals.”
Meanwhile, Saint Cecelia, ridden by Ellis, won the $1,188,000 None Such Sprint Trophy Gr 1 secondary feature over a similar distance in a smart 1:11.0 in wet underfoot conditions.
