Mixed results for Henry, Pyne at Puerto Rico International
Charles Pyne and Gareth Henry, racking up points to earn Jamaica a badminton place at next year’s London Olympic Games, had mixed results at the Puerto Rico International which got under way Thursday in the municipality of Ponce.
Henry, who has jumped 29 places to improve his world ranking to 208th in the world, is set for another significant leap after upstaging sixth seed Daniel Paiola of Brazil 12-21, 21-16, 21-17 in the third round.
Henry took 45 minutes to eject Paiola, ranked 86th in the world, and was set to battle number two seed Peruvian Rodrigo Pacheco, world-ranked at 67th. The Peruvian has already secured a berth, along with 34 other men’s singles players so far, at the Olympic Games.
The 20-year-old Jamaican defeated Brazilian Italo Hauer 21-11, 21-14 in the first round, and American Arnold Setiadi 21-19, 21-15 in the second round, before the showdown with the sixth seeded Brazilian.
Meanwhile Pyne, who moved two places up to 124th in the world ranking, got a bye into the second round only to be defeated 21-13, 19-21, 21-15 by fourth seed Misha Ziberman of Israel with a world ranking of 77th. The match lasted one hour and five minutes.
The Badminton World Federation rankings list on May 3, 2012 will be used to allocate places at the Olympic Games. A total 172 players will be selected for the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. If a player qualifies for more than one discipline, an additional place will go to the single’s event.
In addition, a tripartite commission can decide on three male and three female players with Henry hoping that he will get one of those places.
