Harbour View earn scrappy win
Harbour View gained three valuable points on Sunday as strikes from forward Fabian Taylor and midfielder Joel Senior led them to an unconvincing 2-0 win over 10-man Village United in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at the Compound.
Taylor nodded in after 38 minutes, while Senior sneaked in the second goal three minutes from the end of normal time.
The win put Harbour View on 14 points from 10 matches, while the struggling Trelawny-based team remain at the base of the standing with two points.
The visitors started brightly at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium and could have taken the lead within the first 15 minutes, if not for faulty finishing by Ian McAnuff.
Village’s left-sided playmaker Lacon Brissett whipped in a low cross that beat the Harbour View defence, but McAnuff thumped his six-yard effort onto the crossbar.
Close to the half-hour mark, Brissett was again in the thick of the action as his expertly-weighted pass to McAnuff was relayed to Romaine Roberts, but he mishit his 15-yard shot harmlessly wide.
Approximately 35 minutes into the game Harbour View showed glimpses of attacking intent and fashioned half chances through John Ross Edwards and then Taylor, but both were guilty of poor decision-making on the edge of the 18-yard box.
Taylor made amends minutes later when he pounced after Senior’s left-sided cross, deflected off an opposing defender and wrong-footed Village’s keeper Keith Hamilton.
Harbour View’s attacker Lamar Nelson then spurned two good chances within a minute, as the home team exerted pressure on the brittle Village United defence.
Brissett, who was the visiting team’s main attacking spark during the half, then lost his cool and was red-carded for a wild challenge.
After the break, Taylor almost extended his team’s lead but watched agonisingly as Village’s defender Cordel Simpson twice blocked his point-blank efforts at goal.
The visitors remained a threat on the break, but Shavar Campbell and substitute Teafore Bennett wasted good chances to get back into the game.
Harbour View’s Kemeel Wolfe wasted useful opportunities at the other end, but Senior sealed the three points when his weak effort from the edge of the box crept beneath the dive of Hamilton.
