Unseeded American upsets at 4th ITF event
ROSE HALL, St James — Unseeded American Chalena Scholl created a major upset yesterday when she knocked out top-seeded Mexican Ximena Hermoso in the quarterfinals of the fourth and final in the series of ITF Futures tennis tournaments being played at the Hilton Rose Hall hotel and spa.
Scholl, who was taken to three sets in her first-round win over the Italian Gaia Sanesi, eliminated the top seed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to set up a semi-final meeting today with fourth seed Elizabeth Ferris in an all-American clash.
Yesterday, Ferris advanced past Trinidad and Tobago qualifier Yolande Leacock, 6-1, 7-5.
Leacock who is ranked 1034th in the world, was coming off an upset 6-4, 6-0 win over the fifth seeded Nuria Parrizas-Diaz of Spain who is ranked at 802.
In the other half of the draw, second-seed Katrina Kramperova of the Czech Republic, winner of the second tournament and third seed Isabel Rapisarda-Calvo of Spain will meet for the other place in Saturday morning’s final after wins yesterday.
Kramperova beat eighth seed Michaela Boev of Belgium in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 while Rapisarda-Calvo beat third seed Ana Sofia Sanchez of Mexico, 6-4 6-2.
