Austin, Phillips hold their own in Norway
The 2011 Norwegian Premier League, the Tippeligaen, ended just over a week ago with Jamaican midfielders Rodolph Austin and Demar Phillips each scoring seven goals.
Twenty-six-year-old Austin made a solid contribution for SK Brann to finish fourth in the league, providing four assists and converting four penalties.
Now completing four seasons with SK Brann, Austin started in all 25 matches in 2011, logging 2,209 minutes and was substituted four times. He scored a goal every 316 minutes, his best performance ever for the Norwegian club.
During the first two seasons for SK Brann, Austin scored a total four goals (two in each season) and in 2010 he was scoreless.
Born in Clarendon, the six-foot Austin won two Premier League titles and the CFU Club Championship with Portmore United.
One of the three most valuable players for Brann, the defensive midfielder signed a four-year deal worth £1,000,000 on February 27, 2009.
It proved a worthy investment as Austin, who featured in Jamaica’s Under-20, Under-23 and senior teams, was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2010 Digicel Caribbean for Jamaica’s fifth and his second regional title.
Meanwhile, 28-year-old Phillips netted his seven goals from 22 matches for Aalesunds FK this season, twice coming on as a substitute and six times being replaced.
With a useful left foot, the former Waterhouse and Stoke City player was rewarded with more playing time from 1,248 minutes (17 matches and three goals) in 2010 to 1,812 minutes this year, approximately scoring in every third match.
He was the joint leading scorer for Aalesunds, adding one assist and converting two penalties.
From St Thomas Parish League to Eastern Confederation Super League, to Waterhouse in the Premier League to the national senior team, Phillips best is yet to come.
In fact his record with the Reggae Boyz is better than most, scoring nine goals from 45 caps according to the lastest update.
The other Jamaican in Norway’s top-flight football, 27-year-old midfielder Jason Morrison, played in 23 matches for 1,900 minutes, with one assist and five yellow cards.
A Village United and Portmore United past player, Morrison was inserted in the game twice and replaced three times for Aalesund, who finished in ninth place.
Meanwhile in Norway’s Division One, Damian Williams’ Nybergsund was relegated after finishing in the bottom four of the 16-team league.
The 30-year-old midfielder started in all 20 matches and was replaced eight times.
Another Jamaican in Norway Division One, the Adeccoligaen, was goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr who had eight appearances for 706 minutes for Strommen, who finished in 12th place which was just above the drop.
A 24-year-old, 6ft-5in keeper who was born in Westmoreland, Kerr spent four seasons with Portmore United before heading to Norway this year.
