Village, Harbour View in dull tie
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Village United and Harbour View played out a tired looking 0-0 draw in their second round Red Stripe Premier League game at the Elliston Wakeland Centre yesterday.
Both teams finished the game with 10 men each after referee Gawayne Scott sent off Harbour View’s Fabian Taylor in the 37th minute and Village captain Orlando McBayne in the 84th.
While Harbour View’s Donovan Hayles was not satisfied with the draw, his counterpart Preston Bernard said they would happily take the point given what they had to overcome.
“Yes the game was poor,” he admitted to the Observer after the game. “But we lost a number of players to transfer and was playing without Dino Williams, so this team did not have time to gel before this game,” he added.
Village United, who are languishing in last place, lost a number of players in the transfer period, the two biggest names to go being Oliver Trail and Jerome Eccleston. Top scorer Williams sat out the game due to yellow card accumulation.
Hayles said it was “possibly our worse game of the season so far” and said the blame was to be shared equally between the players and the hard surface at Elliston Wakeland.
Village have been playing at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium, but had to leave the facility that is being prepared for the upcoming music festival. Hayles said Taylor’s red card did not affect the team that much. “We lost an attacking player, but we maintained the four midfielders and that gave the lone striker a bit more work, but we still created good scoring chances,” he contended.
Taylor, the former national striker, was sent off after he reportedly shouted and obscenity at one of his teammates, who he thought had not done enough with a chance he was given.
Village looked the better attacking team in the second half with several good chances, and in one instance, a long-range shot from Ian McAnuff was just kept out of the goal by goalkeeper Devon Haughton in the 67th minute.
In time added on, substitute Aldaine Grant should have done better when he got a pass deep into the Harbour View area, but his shot to the left far post was easily picked off by Haughton.
In another game, champions Tivoli Gardens whipped Highgate 3-1 at Lynch Park.
