Carrington topples McKen in skittles competition
VETERAN skittles player Sidney Carrington produced a scintillating round of play to oust defending champion Robert ‘Dave’ McKen in three sets in the Jamaica Skittles Federation Sista open singles competition at the Mystix Sports bar on Sunday.
McKen was seeking a third Sista title but his former tutor had other ideas.
Carrington proved why he is revered by many players as he played brilliantly to outshine his opponent who led for most of game one only to be pegged back by the former Easter All-Stars captain, who caught the gate lock and won with a last ball sinkers 1260-860.
McKen repaid the favour in the second game to win with a red ball sinkers 1650-1340.
Carrington, however, kept his nerve and won the deciding game 1170-570 to move into the last 16.
Winston ‘Wimpy’ Lyew, 2010 champion of Willies Strikers, easily brushed aside Dane Jones of Eagles Strikers in straight sets.
Lyew gave Jones almost no chance as he won both sets 1860-580 and 1930-800.
Lyew’s win has set up a clash with Clive Woolery, who also won in straight sets over David ‘Shabba’ Adams.
The top half of the draw also includes veteran and former champion Leslie ‘Toothpick’ Puranda who will tackle Garfield ‘Milligram’ Samuels.
In the lower half of the draw, Fred ‘Bushman’ Marsh easily beat Everton Taffe 1130-480 and 1070-510
The talented Stephen Thompson of Eastern All-Stars also made it to the last 16 with a straight set win over Rupert Constable of Waltham Strikers.
Willies Strikers captain Frederick Cooper advanced after he beat Ruthlyn Bail by two sets to one, while his Eagles counterpart Clinton ‘Fly Up’ Thompson also advanced.
The competition continues tomorrow with former champion Keith ‘Colterer’ Barrett tackling Raval Montague, Stacy Miller will oppose Oniel McCalla and Pauline Gentles will oppose Yannick senior.
In the lower half of the draw, Carlton Blake plays Alphanso Morris, Dwayne Green will take on Emmanuel Munda, Neville Elleston against Alphanso Stewart and Former Federation president Steve Daley goes up against Donovan Ashman.
