Porter’s long jump mark 4th in world
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Chanice Porter’s Girls’ Class One long jump record of 6.52 metres achieved on Saturday’s final session of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium is correctly ranked at No 4 on the IAAF performance list for the year.
Porter, the Manchester High School star, smashed Elva Goulbourne’s (Dinthill Technical) mark of 6.47m set 14 years ago, in 1998.
She was breaking her second record at the meet after clearing 1.86m to win the high jump on Friday, and her decision to forgo a higher mark to “save her legs” for the long jump appeared to have paid off handsomely.
Her effort, which beat Holmwood Technical’s Janieve Russell by 34 centimetres, is ranked only behind American Whitney Gibson’s 6.62m, Australian Kerrie Perkins’ and Canada’s Christabel Nettey’s, 6.58m.
Former Manchester High athlete Francine Simpson also leaped 6.43m at a meet in Texas on Saturday.
Sixteen records were broken in the almost week-long Championships, but Porter’s gigantic jump could have been the most impressive, especially given that she was competing at only her second meet this season after recovering from a quad injury.
The IAAF World Youth Championships gold medallist in France last year was a scant 0.01m off the National Junior record of 6.53m set in June 2000 by Nolle Graham, and just shy of the 6.65m B qualifying standard for the Olympic Games later this year.
A day earlier, Porter had beaten National Junior record-holder Kimberly Williamson to win the high jump gold, but declined to go after the 1.88m mark set by the Edwin Allen High student last year.
Porter’s long jump record was one of two set late Saturday after Hyde’s Samara Spencer jumped 6.06m to win the Class 3 event, beating the 5.99m set in 1999 by former Vere athlete Sheree Francis.
The records started falling from the first day on Tuesday’s first session when Rodney Henry of Spalding High broke the record in the heats of the 2,000m steeplechase, clocking 6 minutes 04.61 seconds to surpass the 6:13.20 set last year by St Jago’s Webster Chung.
Kingston College’s (KC) Sanj Powell lowered that time in the final to 6:00.12.
Among the more impressive records set at the five-day meet were Edwin Allen’s Tara-Sue Barnett in the Class One girls discus where she teamed with teammate Danniel Thomas to beat the old distance six times before the final measurement of 50.76m.
Thomas, who won the silver medal, also set a record after throwing the shot put 14.47m. Holmwood’s Gleneve Grange broke the Class Two discus with 46.64m, while Edwin Allen’s Paulann Gayle broke her own Class Three discus record with 42.28m.
On the track, Shauna Helps of Wolmer’s Girls’ timed 11.50 seconds to win the Class Three 100m, erasing Lisa Sharpe’s 11.65 set in 1999.
The Jamaica College Class Two 4x100m relay team ran 40.75 seconds to win gold, while St Jago’s Raheem Chambers clocked 10.86 in the Class Three boys 100m.
