Singer Lenya Wilks working on album
LATE last year, singer Lenya Wilks recorded Yeh Man Jamaica, a patriotic ode to her homeland.
The song, written by Wilks’ manager, was released in November with two major events in mind.
“We hope it can be used as part of our (Jamaica) 50th anniversary celebrations and the Olympics,” she said. “It’s a tribute to country and athletes.”
According to Wilks, Yeh Man Jamaica sums up her feelings about her country.
“I think Jamaica has grown, there are more businesses opening and for such a small country we are a world name. That’s a great achievement,” she said.
Wilks, 22, grew up in St Catherine where she attended Charlemount High School.
She has been performing for some time, having competed for five years in Jamaica Cultural Development Commission competitions.
In 2008, she recorded Fly, her first song which was produced by Shane Brown. She also did a stint with singer Beres Hammond’s Harmony House production company.
Currently, Wilks is working on her first album and has completed six songs to date, including Baby Come to Me and This Love.
