R Danny Williams, a great Jamaican
Dear Editor,
I was delighted to see your front-page article highlighting the dedication of the R Danny Williams Building.
Few people today know of Danny Williams’ contribution to Jamaica. He ran the North American Life Insurance Company making it the number one insurance company at that time. Through the Jamaica IPO (initial public offering) he was able to “Jamaicanise” the North American Life Insurance Company to Life of Jamaica, and the rest is history.
Danny is a pioneer in this aspect, taking foreign-owned companies and establishing them in the Jamaican market.
He is an example of great salesmanship, has an astute business head, a work ethic rarely seen, and is a leader par excellence.
His achievements to date have come about because of his extraordinary business acumen. It should also be said that in the 1970s Danny Williams served as one of Jamaica’s most exemplary trade and industry ministers of government.
To top it all, he is one of the nicest human beings that anyone could ever meet. Always ready to help a friend or people with whom he is not familiar.
Of course, Danny’s success is one of the true examples of a great wife behind a great man.
He is, indeed, a Jamaican son who has contributed greatly to his country.
I wish therefore to thank him on behalf of Jamaica, and wish him and his family everything that’s good.
