Jaguars, Hoopers notch wins in FLOW NBL West
MONTEGO BAY, St James — After being restricted to a 67-62 win over Sav Hawks on Saturday, unbeaten leaders Granville Jaguars will seek to atone when the teams meet again in a third-round Flow National Basketball League-West game at Montego Bay Cricket Club at 6:30 pm today.
Granville, who improved their tally to 18 points from nine straight wins, were expected to roll over Sav Hawks, losers of six straight, but were surprised by the Westmoreland team who battled them all the way and came up just short.
Earlier in the day, MoBay Hoopers continued their good late showing with an upset 71-66 win over defending champions Catherine Hall All-Stars to close the gap on the champions.
Granville sit comfortably at the top with 18 points, followed by Catherine Hall on 15, two more than Hoopers. Hawks are next on 11, one more than Lucea Flames, while Railway Tigers are at the bottom on eight from seven games.
On Sunday, for the second time in four days, bad weather forced the postponement of matches.
After a season-high 119 points against Lucea on Tuesday, Granville’s potent scoring machine was expected to exceed triple-digit mark for the fourth time against the Hawks.
The teams were, however, tied at 16 after the first quarter, while Jaguars edged ahead, 35-32, at half-time before increasing that margin by a mere point in each of the next two quarters, despite a game-high 16 points from the Hawks’ Richard Chambers.
Dave Black Jnr was Granville’s top scorer with 15 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Greg Bernard came off the bench to score his first double-double of the season — 14 points and 10 rebounds, along with two blocked shots and three steals — while Andrew Whilby scored eight points and had 11 rebounds.
In addition to Chamber, Sav got 14 points, four rebounds and four steals from Terrence Tate, while Richard Russell scored 12 points, five rebounds, seven steals and four assists.
Hoopers led by 10 points going into the fourth quarter and managed to hold off a charging All-Stars, led by Goyan Malcolm’s 17 points and double-doubles from big men Kurt Dorman and Jermaine Rerrie.
The teams were tied at 15 apiece after the first quarter, but Hoopers edged in front, 32-29, at half-time and 51-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Nicholas Watson scored 16 points to lead Hoopers, while Jason Blake had his best outing for Hoopers since transferring from Railway Tigers with 15 points and three assists. Player/coach Omar Bell had 13 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Malcolm led the All-Stars with 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Dorman scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds, while Rerrie had 12 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and three steals.
