PALAS to award 42 scholarships
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Atlanta-based charity organisation Peace and Love Academic Scholarship (PALAS) will be awarding 42 scholarships to Caribbean students ages ranging from 11 to 22.
Jamaica’s scholarship award presentation will take place at the Excelsior High School on Mountain View Avenue on Saturday, August 25.
The keynote speaker for the occasion will be Phillip Paulwell, Science, Technology, Energy and Mining minister.
The brainchild of founder/executive director Rula Brown, the PALAS programme was established in December 2010, to honour the memory of young Vanessa Campbell, an aspiring Jamaican artiste who was a casualty of crime and violence.
After Vanessa’s premature death, an initial scholarship programme was created as the Vanessa Campbell Academic Scholarship to assist high school students from her alma mater, Bridgeport High School.
This year PALAS, who has extended the programme to University students, will be awarding the Kavorn Shue Academic Scholarship to honour the memory of Kavorn Shue who met his untimely violent death at the hands of the police recently. A college student from the community where he resided will be awarded a scholarship in his name.
