Wray All-Stars, Mico Masters clash in T20 finale
WRAY All-Stars and Mico Masters will meet in the final of the 2012 inaugural Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Masters T20 cricket final tomorrow at the Kensington Cricket Club, commencing at 2:00 pm.
Both teams reached the grand final by winning their respective semi-finals earlier this month. Wray All-Stars had beaten May Pen Lions by eight wickets, while Mico Masters registered an eight-wicket win over Domtar Sports Club.
Both losers will battle for third place, starting at 10:00 am.
Scores in the semi-finals: May Pen Lions 116 for seven wickets off 20 overs; Wray All-Stars 117 for two off 15.5 overs. Domtar Sports Club 148 for five wickets off 20 overs; Mico Masters replied with 149 for two wickets off 19.5 overs.
The champions will carry off a cash award of $50,000 and the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Trophy, while the runners-up will receive $20,000 and third $10,000.
Other individual prizes to be won are the Most Valuable Player ($10,000 and a trophy), Most Runs ($5,000), Most Wickets ($5,000), Most Catches by a Wicketkeeper ($2,500) and Most Fielding Catches ($2,500).
Meanwhile, a special prize will be presented for centuries scored and so far only one batsman has achieved that feat in Dillon Ebanks of Melbourne, who scored an unbeaten knock of 102 against Portmore. The scores: Melbourne 176 for three wickets in 20 overs, Portmore replied with 133 for four wickets off 20 overs.
Delroy Williams, who is the captain of Mico Masters team, said the final should produce some exciting cricket.
“With all due respect for my opponents, our bowling is our main strength and we would like to restrict them to a manageable scores to chase… the players are prepared for a very hard fight,” Williams said.
Wray All-Stars Captain John Gordon said, his team is taking the field as favourites, and therefore the pressure is on to capture the title.
“We are expecting a very tough battle with Mico Masters as they are a very good team and it is going to be very hard to beat them, but we are nevertheless going out there to be victorious,” Gordon said.
Wray All-Stars have several past Jamaican players in their line-up, which includes Wayne Lewis, Nehemiah Perry, Raymond Ferguson, Terrence Corke, Baldwin Virgo, Dennis Morgan, and Robert Turner.
Mico Masters also have former Jamaica representatives in their line-up such as the hard-hitting opening pair of Orville Pennant and Carl Brissett, Michael Marshall, Michael Donegal, Calvin McGregor, and Christopher Flemming.
